Poor Backboards

Darryl Dawkins was one of the most physically imposing players in NBA history. He was one of the first players to make the jump from high school straight to the pros a decision he made due to financial hardships. Dawkins was drafted fifth by the 76ers in the 1975 NBA Draft. He never met expectations that were set for him, but he still had plenty of great highlights.

In a game against the Kansas City Kings in November 1979, Dawkins threw down such a massive dunk that the backboard shattered into shards, sending the Kings’ Bill Robinzine ducking for cover (Darryl Dawkins called the dunk “The Chocolate-Thunder-Flying, Robinzine-Crying, Teeth-Shaking, Glass-Breaking, Rump-Roasting, Bun-Toasting, Wham-Bam, Glass-Breaker-I-Am-Jam”). Three weeks later he did it again, a few days after that the NBA ruled that breaking a backboard was an offense that would result in a fine and suspension.

The very talented Darryl Dawkins only averaged 12 points and 6 rebounds in his career because of skipping college and injuries.

After a tough loss to the Mavericks the Sixers bounce back. Andre Iguodala messed around and got a triple double with 10 rebounds, 13 assist, and 22 points. He got two of those 22 points with this week’s play of the week. The Sixers next game is tomorrow night as they host the Golden State Warriors and hope to avenge their late December loss to the Warriors. Also the Sixers hope to be 2 games over .500 since 2009.

Crossover to Stardom

Iverson was criticized a lot during his rookie season: his crossovers were being called for a traveling violation, he was called a ball hog, he was held responsible for the Sixers poor season and he was condemned for not showing respect to NBA players. To make matters worse Michael Jordan also made a comment stating that Iverson must show respect to him and his team (the Chicago Bulls).Fortunately for A.I, much of those negative comments stopped on March 12, 1997. On that memorable day  Iverson let his game do the talking; which sent a message that The Answer” needs to be respected. A.I scored 37 points and crossed over to stardom when he “shook” Michael Jordan.

The NBA Finals always bring out the best in players. It makes average players look like superstars and it makes superstars look like they are basketball gods. With that being said superstar Julius Erving performed a move that is still shown in TV shows and commercials all over the U.S. He performed a move that players like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan would have a hard time doing. In Game 5 of the 1980 NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers Julius Erving made history he executed arguably the best play in NBA history.

Given that there was not a play of the week for last week, you will be able to see two terrific plays this week. The Sixers finally showed life in the 3rd quarter on Sunday against the Knicks; Playing stingy defense and coming up with turnovers and fast break points. One particular play sparked a huge run late in the 3rd quarter to cut the score to three points before they fell to the Knicks 117-103. Watch this weeks’ play of the week.
